ooFEBRUARY - The Paisley Pattern

The upper part of the banner shows the spiritual life of the city with the Cathedral, the mother church of Glasgow surrounded by elements illustrating other principal religions.

The central image shows the Eastern Tree of Life designed by Lorraine Davin and the Castlehead Group, Paisley. The embroidery was created by Asian and Paisley women, ably assisted by schoolchildren. It shows how the cultures of east and west meet through the Paisley motif which has its roots in Asia. There are many traditional Asian techniques involved in the manufacture of the banner and as a result it is rich and vivid.
